Peter Herbert

Originally from Vorarlberg, Austria, the double bassist and composer Peter Herbert has been living in Paris since 2003 (following 14 years in New York City).

He performs as a soloist, in duos with David Tronzo (slide guitar) or Carol Robinson (bass clarinet / electronics), in trios with Chris Culpo (piano) / Jean-Charles Richard (saxophone), Huw Warren (piano) / Martin France (drums) or Marcel Khalife (oud) / Bachar Khalife (percussion), in quartets, quintets, etc. and is also a renowned orchestral soloist (playing with e. g. the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, etc.). The double bass sextet “bass instinct” has been his artistic base in Vienna since 2003. He is also the winner of the Hans Koller Prize 2001 (“musician of the year”) and much in demand as a sideman in various jazz formations, e. g. the Art Farmer / Clifford Jordan Quintet, the Marc Copland / John Abercrombie Quartet, Bobby Previte’s “The Horse”, the John Clark Octet or Robin Eubanks’ “Mental Images.” His work in this field is amply documented by more than 120 CD recordings.

As a composer Peter Herbert writes pieces for various orchestras and chamber music ensembles (Cascabel / NYC , Absolute Ensemble / NYC , Janus Ensemble / Vienna, Vorarlberger Symphonieorchester, ensemble plus / Bregenz, etc.) as well as film and theater scores (Aktionstheater ensemble / Vienna, K.L.A.S. Kärnten, La Voz Festival of the Americas, etc.). In 1999 he founded the internet record label “Aziza Music”.

Since 2007 Peter Herbert teaches a small double bass class at the JIM / Anton Bruckner University in Linz, Austria.

Songs from the iconic musician Joni Mitchell, re-invented in a chamber music like environment, carefully arranged by Peter Herbert. Unique!
