Entre parenthèses – in parenthesis, as an aside, incidentally. Choosing this title for a portrait CD seems like an exercise in understatement. Thomas Wally, though, does not regard a parenthesis as marginal, but as figure of thought. What appears to be in the margin, becomes the focus: for instance in the title of Caprice (VIII) pa[ren]thétique, with the brackets right in the middle of the word, both describing and embodying the compositional technique.
Three works written in the course of eight years, representing three positions on an axis between “formal” and “free” imaged by Wally.The Caprice (VIII) (2017) is created without sketches, on the spur of the moment: again and again an insertion breaks the flow – music “entre parenthèses.” Les Îles des nombres V (2020) is based on rigid intervals, a strict construction revealed through specks of sound created by harp, vibraphone and celesta: mathematical structures evolving into poetry. The Concertino (2024), written for violinist Ivana Pristašová-Zaugg, puts larger brackets around Wally’s ideas: repeated attempts to arrive at C frame the composition like a recurring punctuation mark.
Thomas Wally (violinist with ensemble LUX, substitute with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, radio presenter, etc.) writes his music in between the brackets of a musician’s many-voiced life. “I have always been keen on understanding music,” Wally says, “on trying to see what’s behind it, even more than on playing myself.” After Jusqu’à l’aurore (2020), this is Wally’s second portrait released with col legno, a portrait (incidentally) compiled from the core of his oeuvre. |

Thomas Wally is an Austrian composer, violinist and senior lecturer of music theory courses at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His music has been performed by many international ensembles and orchestras, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Boulez Ensemble, Meitar Ensemble, Mondrian Ensemble, Klangforum Wien, PHACE, Studio Dan, OENM, NAMES, airborne extended, risonanze erranti, mise-en and Ensemble STYX. Wally’s compositions are featured at festivals such as Wien Modern, Bregenzer Festspiele, Ultraschall Berlin, Klangspuren Schwaz, Transart Bozen, Impuls Graz and Musiktheatertage Wien.
