Five musicians living on air, and within its jurisdiction. Breath turns into sound, sound needs breath – an equation put into practice by the woodwind quintet on a daily basis, with five instruments that do not really go together, and have been presenting composers with a multitude of challenges for two centuries.
Three of these challenges are demonstrated on this album – three concepts of music placed deliberately side by side. Valerie Coleman’s Tzigane unleashes the energy of Romany music: ten minutes of rhythmic precision and presence of sound. Jean Françaix’ quintet no. 1 is of a completely different ilk – neoclassical elegance and subtle irony; the quintet’s interpretation, though, centers around the communicative aspect, the delicate balancing between virtuosity and a shared understanding of sound. And finally, Kalevi Aho in his quintet no. 1 puts the focus on the intricacies of the instrumentation: extreme contrasts, balance, and the merging of the voices.
The Dandelion Quintett was formed in 2018 at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater. They were awarded the first prize at the Ars Ventus Competition in Bucharest, invited to Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus and Festspiele Erl. Their debut album Windspiel was released with col legno in 2024. Luft nach oben is the second chapter – and perhaps a conclusive argument for Esa-Pekka Salonen’s observation that in music, “there really are more similarities than differences.” Especially for an instrumentation often considered to be difficult to unite. |

The Dandelion Quintett was formed in 2018, inspired by the five members’ shared enthusiasm for chamber music. Throughout the next few years, from 2018 to 2024, in the course of their chamber music studies at the Munich Hochschule für Musik und Theater, the ensemble was mentored and promoted by Prof. Eberhard Marschall and Prof. Reto Bieri, which enabled them to develop their unique artistic vocabulary.
Success was not long in coming. In 2019 the quintet were awarded the first prize at the Ars Ventus Competition in Bucharest. The same year they took part in the prestigious Carl Nielsen International Music Competition in Copenhagen, attracting the attention of an international audience.
In the years since, the ensemble were invited to notable chamber music festivals, including Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, Tiroler Festspiele Erl, and other relevant concert series in Germany and abroad. The quintet’s musical development is influenced as much by their ongoing collaborations with renowned artists as by their in-depth study of the repertoire.
Their debut album Windspiel, released in 2024 with the Vienna-based international label col legno, was received with great critical acclaim and bears witness of the ensemble’s artistic maturity.
The Dandelion Quintett’s artistic originality is characterized by the way they merge virtuosity with pure joy in playing. The result is an exceptionally colorful variety of sound – a quality unique in its intensity in the realm of chamber music, and in particular woodwind quintets.
