Werner Pirchner is ranked among Austria’s foremost composers of the late 20th century. His long musical association with AkkoSax has now inspired them to a posthumous tribute to this original and individualistic mind, who was at home as much in jazz and theater forums as in concert halls. Even those who have never experienced him live know his music, from the signature tune he wrote for Ö1, the Austrian cultural radio station.
Siggi Haider (accordion) and Hannes Sprenger (saxophone) pay homage to their late compatriot, who died in 2001, with lively and open-minded reinterpretations of compositions closely associated with their own musical history. The »Kleine Messe um C für den lieben Gott«, or Little Mass around C for our Dear Lord, performed by Siggi Haider many years ago to accompany Felix Mitterer’s play »Stigma«, takes AkkoSax back to their roots, as they play from Pirchner’s handwritten score. In the »Sonate vom rauhen Leben«, the Sonata of the Rugged Life, the AkkoSax sound is shaped by the duo’s past experience in performing together with Pirchner.
It is fascinating to listen to they way the two instruments complement each other, recording a twofold dialogue: one between Siggi Haider and Hannes Sprenger, the other between the two of them and Werner Pirchner. He, like the two colleagues who now interpret his music, was always known for his skill in creating an intelligent balance between tradition and an innovative musical approach.
